I am now a librarian!

I have finally become a real librarian. How is that, you ask? I have finally been asked the question which has been plaguing members of our profession for years:

Where is the bathroom?

Arts and Crafts

I am not paying lots of money to get a Master of Library and Information Science so that I can spend my day cutting out letters so I can climb a ladder and tape them to the wall of the student lounge.

This is getting ridiculous.

Of course, I got a compliment from my boss. I guess I did a good job.

Ugh.

Quotation

I love this quotation:

I am inclined to think, sir, that perhaps the two most valuable and satisfactory characteristic products of American civilization are the librarian, on the one hand, and the cocktail on the other. I will not attempt, sir, the delicate question of deciding which is best, but I am given to understand that some of us have sampled both and found them equally satisfactory and equally stimulating.

—Croydon (England) Public Librarian L. Stanley Jast, responding on behalf of overseas visitors to a welcoming address by Louisiana Purchase Exposition President David Francis, at the first session of ALA Annual Conference, Oct. 17, 1904, held at the St. Louis World's Fair.

Night Activities

For those of you who can escape city lights, the Perseid meteor shower will peak late Sunday night.

Quoted:

"We are no longer going to be part of the security forces; we are going to be part of the community."
~Nicholas Parker, lieutenant general in the British army, on its withdrawal from Northern Ireland after a 38-year mission.

Thoughts?

Libraries in Space?

NASA's newest Mars lander is bringing a "library" to Mars. If you ask me, it's less of a library and more of a special collection.

It's also using antiquated technology. If we can't read it, why are we expecting Martians of the future to be able to read it?

There's Latin at the end!

I don't know anything about the article in question and I'm not really a medievalist, (but I am trying!), but this blog entry is fabulous. My favorite Latin saying is at the end.

It has been ages since I posted here. Tonight I have very little to say except that I can't sleep. I should have been sound asleep and dreaming an hour ago, but I'm online instead in the hopes of getting tired enough to sleep.

Sorry for wasting your time with such a pointless post.

Classification Web

Is this mess of a web site making anyone else nuts? I'm trying to get Assignment 5 done for Judith. I got part one okay, but part two just doesn't seem to want to work. Is there a trick to it that I'm missing?

I tried the tutorial. Maybe it's the late hour, but it's not really helping. Unfortunately, I've been doing my homework during the day and that's not a good time for it since the Pitt librarians have to work too. Grr.

I think I'm going to give up for the night.

Music

I'm not sure if this is the type of music any of you will appreciate, but here's a song called "Harrisburg." My favorite line is "It's a long way to Heaven; it's closer to Harrsiburg."

Enjoy!

Resources

Does anyone have any suggestions for resources for photographs of the medieval artwork (paintings, windows, sculpture, engravings, what-have-you) inside Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland and Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin?

Thank you!

Stef, don't hate me!

But why is it so difficult to get to Pittsburgh? It's such a long drive and flights are wickedly expensive. I'm trying to get a friend of mine out for the week after the oncampus session, but he's in Boston. There's no good way to get there. The train (although relatively cheap) is longer than the 11 hour drive.

It should be easier to get to Pittsburgh!

Local News

Here's an article from my local paper about Internet usage in the libraries.

I found it interesting.

It was a dark and stormy night

In the darkness, yellow leaves are strewn by a violent wind punctuated by rain drops. Jazz plays softly in the background. Required readings are being ignored in favor of my new favorite web comic, Unshelved.

Hot apple cider, apple spice bread, jazz, a library web comic. What more does a girl need?
